Our Team Story
Please join me on December 21 for Writing Against the Darkness. In a midwinter twist on the Alzheimer's Association's #TheLongestDay fundraising event, we'll be writing between dawn and dusk on the shortest day of the year. We’ll start the day together (virtually) at sunrise Seattle time (7:55 a.m. PST) for a half hour of writing prompts and inspiration, then write on our own for as much time as we have: an hour or two or all day long. We’ll virtually reconvene as the sun sets (at 4:21 p.m. PST) and listen to each others’ stories. (Sharing is not mandatory.) All are welcome, whether you’re a frequent writer or not. Stories about living with or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s in this pandemic year are especially encouraged, but not mandatory; likewise stories about coping with dementia during the holiday season.
Sign up here as a member of the Writing Against the Darkness team and encourage family and friends to donate to your page. OR make a donation of any amount by clicking the “donate” button. Either way, I’ll send you a Zoom invitation for December 21 and together, we’ll support the Alzheimer’s Association while writing!
I’m doing this because I am a writer who loves encouraging people to write. And because my mother died of Alzheimer’s disease, and I want to do what I can to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association’s research program and support services for people living with Alzheimer’s, their families and caregivers. That support has been (and will continue to be) more crucial than ever during the pandemic. More than 5.8 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s.
I am the author of a memoir about my mom and Alzheimer’s called Her Beautiful Brain. In the summer of 2020, I recorded an audio book version: a project I began on June 20 as a fundraiser for The Longest Day.
This Winter Solstice “write-a-thon” is inspired by Benjamin Gorman, an author and publisher in Oregon who came up with the name: Writing Against the Darkness. He and his team are hoping more writers around the country will form Writing Against the Darkness teams of their own and gather virtually on the shortest day to write and to support the Alzheimer’s Association.
Questions? Email me. I look forward to seeing you at 7:55 a.m. on December 21 on Zoom! On this shortest day of the year, let's write against the darkness.
