Our Team Story
The Mike Golf competition was started in 2016 in memory of my friend's brother, Mike Collins, who died at age 67 from early onset Alzheimer's. What started as a three-team golf and fundraising competition has grown to 14 teams in 6 states and has raised almost $175,000 in the first 7 years. My golf team (Mike Golf 3) won the golf competition in our inaugural year. We are playing again this year, our 8th annual competition, in Mike's memory. It’s all about love for those affected by Alzheimer's disease so, on or about June 21, we’ll do what we love - playing golf - to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
This year, in addition to honoring Mike, we are also remembering Roger Buckingham, who, as the Alzheimer's director of Gift Giving for the Northwest, introduced us to the Longest Day fundraising event back in 2016. He was instrumental in mentoring us in creating our golf challenge. Roger passed away in late 2022 from ALS, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease. He will be missed.
