is fundraising to honor:
My Dad and the Aquino Family
to fight Alzheimer's
My dad Salvatore had 11 smart, funny, vital siblings who overcame poverty to make meaningful, productive lives. But as they aged, he – and I - watched helplessly as one after another fell victim to Alzheimer's or other dementia.
My Longest Day activity is making jam from the fruit that I grow in my Hollywood garden, and is inspired directly by my Aquino forbearers: You see, my grandparents used every inch of their small Brooklyn lot to grow as much as they could to feed their big brood. They harvested figs, grapes (for wine), tomatoes and peppers and broccoli and beans, even root vegetables grown in a cold frame over the winters, all fertilized with manure they would collect from local stables.
As an adult, my father always planted his own garden, too and inspired me to do the same. My garden, like my Dad’s, even has a big fig tree grown from the tree that grew from the cutting that my grandfather brought from Italy in the 19th century!
This year, the Longest Day is also Father’s Day, and I’ll be in the kitchen with my (fully vaccinated!) friends turning my blackberry harvest into jam in honor of my Dad and his family. I'll be sharing pictures, videos and a live-stream of the chaotic activity. I hope you'll join us.
Anyone donating $250 or more will receive a jar of my special EndALZ blackberry jam (or fig jam, but that's later in the summer) as a thank-you. Or, if you'd like a cutting to grow your own Aquino fig tree, let me know and I can do that, too - it's a true heirloom fig and especially delicious.
Any amount is deeply appreciated, and just $25 will put you in a raffle for jam and other fun swag. So please make your tax-deductible donation right now (preferably before the 20th) to help raise awareness, support the people affected and find a cure for Alzheimer's.
With thanks and love ,
