In March of 2013 I will embark on a journey to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. Part of my motivation for this hike is to raise money for Alzheimer's research and awareness. Recently a close family member was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's disease. At the age of 60, many aspects of his everyday life became struggles for him. Simple tasks such as getting dressed and tying his shoes are now a recurring challenge. Although he keeps a positive attitude, the disease has completely changed his life and will continue to shape his future.
Before this diagnosis I had never been exposed to Alzheimer's and did not comprehend the effects of the disease on not only the person with Alzheimer's but also their family and friends. After witnessing the disease first hand I am very passionate about wanting to fundraise for the Alzheimer's Association. Donations to the organization are allocated to Alzheimer's care, support, research, awareness and advocacy. The Alzheimer's Association is a not-for profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. Donations made through this website go directly to the organization.
I would like to encourage a pledge donation (pledge per-mile). If you would like to pledge an amount per-mile please leave a response in the guest book with your name, e-mail address, and amount you would like to pledge, or send an e-mail with this information to brittney.gustin@gmail.com. Keep in mind that the length of the trail is approximately 2,180 miles. I will use mileage published in David Miller's "The AT Guide" to determine how far I have hiked. After completing my hike I will contact anyone who has pledged and you can make your donation through this webpage at that time.
