Dr. Mark Hutto is a true Atlanta native. Born at Crawford Long Hospital, he grew up in Brookhaven and Sandy Springs (inside the Perimeter before there was a Perimeter). Graduating from UGA (BS Biochemistry,’74) and Emory School of Medicine (’78), and Emory Psychiatric residency (’82), he has been especially interested in the behavioral aspects of neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s Disease. He has treated many people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias over his forty-four year career in psychiatry and has witnessed the severe effects on patients and their families. Dr. Hutto was medical director of the psychiatric unit of Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital (’88 to ’91) and Peachford Hospital Geriatric Unit (’91 to ’95).

Dr. Hutto has been involved in Georgia organized medical societies his entire career. He was the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association (GPPA) president in 1998/99. He was Psychiatrist of the Year for GPPA in 1992/93. He is proud to be a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Hutto has engaged in many risky activities: scuba diving, bareboat sailing, kayaking, skydiving, bungee jumping, snow skiing, driving fast at Road Atlanta and other courses and doing back flips off the “jumping rock.” So, he will take a risk and try ballroom dancing.

Dr. Hutto is dancing to increase awareness of the impact that Alzheimer’s Disease has on patients, families and the community and to support research for effective treatments for this devastating disease.
