I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 14 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
The day Dad was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, end of 2014, we knew our world changed, but we did not know by how much. It has been devastating to watch his decline. This new level of challenges dealing with COVID-19 has placed an added layer of confusion and unwanted loss of connection to happen sooner than we expected. Window visits are not the same. The look of sadness breaks my heart. The facility check-ins with how he is doing makes me cry as he searches for his wife or talks of another place. Fast forward to end of 2020 and first half of 2021. I have been blessed to be able to take Dad to his urologist appointments. These in-person visits are very much cherished. His smiles is forever stamped on my heart. You can see how this year of of irregular living has taken a toll with his memory. He talks about his time when most of his aunts and uncles were still alive. He easily gets worried and the facility has to call Mom, so she can then talk with him to calm him. This is an absolute horrible disease. I hate how his life has to be so separated from my Mom and the rest of us. I wish there was a magic wand, but instead I bring awareness, advocate and be part of making a difference to honor him. I am very blessed to be his daughter.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease and other types of Dementia. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for helping and joining me fight against Alzheimer's and other types of Dementia!
