My grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2019. At the time, I didn't know much about the disease and my main concern was, when will he forget me?
When I'd visit him, I would tell myself to do certain things to help him remember me - tuck my hair behind my ears, smile, say, "Hi, Grandpa." There was no evidence to support what I had in my mind as true - that he would have an easier time remembering me if I did this - but I would've done anything if it meant he'd know my face when he saw me.
The truth is, Alzheimer's is a devastating and complicated disease that affects so much more than a person's memory. For every Alzheimer's patient, there are numerous caregivers, family members, and friends who are impacted by this disease. Walk to End Alzheimer's raises funds to support the Alzheimer's Association's mission of leading the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia. The funds raised for Walk help support critical research for treatments, help create resources and support for caregivers and families, and most importantly, help bring us one step closer to a cure and meeting the first Alzheimer's survivor.
On the last day that I saw my grandpa, his memory and health were declining after three years with Alzheimer's, but he knew me the moment I walked in the door. I'm so thankful for that day and for the opportunity to honor him by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer's as a Team Captain and the Constituent Events Manager in Northern Nevada.
My grandpa was a fun-loving man who worked hard to achieve his goals - even when the odds were stacked against him. As I walk for my grandpa, my grandma, my parents, and my family, my goal is to help bring us one step closer to ending Alzheimer's and all other dementia. If you're able, please consider making a donation or registering for your local Walk to End Alzheimer's, and join me in spreading hope to those impacted by this disease.
