Learning about Alzheimer's came as a shock to our family. My mom, Paula Rugoff, was a very strong woman - when her dad passed away she had my grandmother move in with her - where she stayed until we lost her to Alzheimer's - back then we just called it old age. She married my dad, watched him go off to the service and raised two children. She went back to work and without a degree became a senior editor of a biological agricultural journal until she retired. She survived quintuple bi pass surgery, she nursed my dad through several years of a very difficult cancer fight - and then she lost the love of her life. In her late 70's she made a challenging change - moved from New York and re-started her life in Cape Coral Florida - new friends, new neighborhood - new everything. And then we blessed her with Sammi, her shih Tzu - who she named after my Dad - walked 4 - 5 times a day and kept her great company. And then it happened, she fell and broke her femur and had to have emergency surgery. Today we would ask very different questions, but then we didn't know. The anesthesia threw Mom into Alzheimer's and she would never recover, never get to go home, never get to be with her Sammi - she was quickly losing her mind. When she was lucid she was scared and totally disoriented. It was amazing to watch a strong loving dedicated woman become a mere shell of herself - and then I understood the devastation of this disease. In her memory and out of respect for a life well lived we want to sponsor this fundraiser and others and help stop this dreaded disease. Our beloved Japanese Chin, Porky Hanney III, also died of dementia at the age of 16 1/2. No one is immune--not even our beloved pets. If you are suffering - you are not alone - we are here to help - but please, become part of our team, make a donation - give some love to Mom - hope you are dancing with Dad in heaven and being your old self!!!
Our company UNLIMITED PRIORITIES will match the first $2,500 raised and The Hanney's will match the next $2,500 raised!!!!
Thank you for helping advance Alzheimer's support, care and research.
