My mom has always been my best friend. I talked to her every day despite the fact that we are a 6 hr drive away. My mom is now 78. 6 years ago she was leading her life as usual. Very little indicated what was to come. Then my dad passed away from a fall due to Lewy Body Dementia. Her personality changed but I thought it was grief then I thought it was me. 2015 I knew something was wrong. Late in 2016 she was diagnosed and needed to be placed in assisted living with memory care. A year and a half later she needed to be moved to a nursing home in a memory care unit. I really miss my pre Alzheimer’s mom.
My friend Lisa is joining me in this. Her mom Betty was recently officially diagnosed but has not been herself for a few years. This disease Is heartbreaking for her family and mine.
I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
