On September 21, 2017, my father lost his 8 year battle with Alzheimer's and I lost an amazing dad and friend! Prior to my father's Alzheimer's diagnoses in 2009 I had no connection to the disease and certainly no experience. The 8 year journey opened my eyes to the impact the disease has on the person, family, friends and overall quality of life. I witnessed, experienced and watched my father go from a very active, giving, loving, kind, fun, full of life and a people person, to someone whose every step is a struggle and someone who can get frustrated due to the changes he is experiencing, but has no control over. Through it all, his sense of humor and other attributes remained, sometimes they just needed a little coaxing.
I am holding onto the memories and remembering my father for who he was prior to the disease and also very thankful for the time I had with him during the battle. We created some good memories in the midst of a difficult situation. He was an amazing man, one I want to continue living in honor of.
