When I was young, I spent a lot of time with my grandpa Jim. He would hold my hand as we went gallivanting like toddlers together. We were laughing and joking the entire time, with no regard for judgment. He helped shape me into the man I am now.
I was too young to really understand what it meant when he was initially diagnosed with Alzheimer's, but as time progressed, I started to see the love and light dwindle from the eyes of a man I cherished. Before long, Grandpa Jim forgot who I was, and then it was only a matter of time. I would do anything to be able to sit down with him one more time, talk to each other, and share our old joy. I wouldn't want anyone to experience something so terrible.
As I mentally prepare for the biggest adventure of my life--hiking the length of the Appalachian Trail--I keep remembering our rambles, his life, and its influence on mine. As I sit here, I've come to the realization that I want to do this hike in honor of everyone who is coping with Alzheimer's in any capacity and as a celebration of their greatest adventures through life. I have chosen to partner with the Alzheimer's Association to raise money from Springer Mountain in Georgia all the way to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. My goal is $5,000 and with the help of every dollar donated, together we can fight back against Alzheimer's. I earnestly ask you for a donation of $30 towards the Alzheimer's Association's research.
