Our Mom, Vicki, peacefully lost her long battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease the morning of August 3rd, 2012.

Victoria Kelly Byers was born March 12, 1939 to Franklin and Virginia Kelly, and grew up in New Orleans, LA, where she attended the Newman School.

Vicki moved to New England to attend Smith College, her beloved alma matter to which she remained loyal until the end, assisting as best she could with her 50th reunion in Northampton in 2010 despite her illness. After college she married and settled in Darien, CT where she raised her three children.

Vicki spent 15 years as head of Development at Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT, and was a former President of the Junior League of Stamford Norwalk. She was also a devoted member of the congregation at St. Luke's Episcopal Church for 48 years, and saw both her daughters get married there.

She is survived by her proudest achievement, her three children and their families, including eight grandchildren: Ginny Churchill & her husband Eric of Wellesley, MA, and their children Nicholas, Benjamin, William & Eliza; Adair Scott & her husband Simon of New Canaan, CT, and their children Annabelle, Schyler & Jack; and Crawford Byers & his wife Karen of Denver, CO and their son CJ.

A memorial service for Vicki will take place on Thursday September 13th at 10:00 am at St. Luke's Church in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's research using the link on this page, or to St. Luke's Parish in Darien by mailing to:

Dear Ginny, Adair and Crawford - I haven't stopped thinking about you all and your wonderful mom. I have so many memories of your mom from our days at Williams (and beyond) Ginny and I can hear her voice as if it was yesterday! I know first hand how terrible it is to watch a loved one suffer from this horrific disease and I hope that the holes in your hearts are soon filled with loving memories of her during happier and healthier times. All my love always, Courteney

Ginny, Adair and Crawford,
I have thought of you all so often these last few weeks. Your amazing mom touched so many lives. I have the best memories of our family travels together (when we affectionately gave her the title of "Saint Vicki"), of Vicki's deep love for each of you and of her zest for life! She was ever the gracious hostess, whether to a party of hundreds or to just one or two of us sitting at your kitchen table....that warm welcome was always felt. I know you all will miss her, but I expect that all that love she had for you will always be felt in your sweet families and that her memory will live on! Sending each of you our love!

Dear Ginny, Adair and Crawford,
I learned of your mother's death as I was walking into a New Orleans-style restaurant for my birthday dinner with friends. I smiled through my tears as they played Louis Armstrong's version of "It's a Wonderful World" - and I did my best to remember how much your mother helped make my time in Darien a more "wonderful world."
We shared nursery-school carpools (for Crawford and Robin), worked together on the Junior League architectural program, wore our pajamas to Labor Day beach breakfasts, spent several days in Charleston with my parents who adored her, shared fun evenings with friends at the Explorers Club in NYC - and through all those times we talked and laughed and laughed and laughed through thick and thin.
I miss her - and am thinking of you and your children during this time of loss. I have been in California this summer and don't return East until Sept 24, so I will miss her service. But please know my thoughts will certainly be with you that day.
Much love to you all,
Alison (MacEwan) Jones

Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you, Ginny, Adair and Crawford, and all of your families. We have wonderful recollections of Vicki in her prime, and each of you and your children carry on her best. It is a blessing she could pass on in peace.

Dear Ginny, Adair and Crawford,
Thinking of your mom brings me back to all things wonderful about our childhood. It is all the small memories that keep flashing through my brain. Your mom made me realize that adults can have their own private stash of chocolate! And who could forget your mom"s Christmas parties? No matter how much chaos was happening before the party, your mom was the perfect host and impeccably dressed.
Much love,
Jenny

To My Second set of Siblings,
My heart breaks for the three of you. Your mother (Aunt Vicki) was truly my second mother. I must have spent one third of my childhood at your house.
I have so many amazing memories of her; Coca-Cola, Hershey Bars, Oyster Stew at Christmas, Easter Egg hunts, her impeccable attention to detail, great hand writing. Her love of preppy! Pappagallo shoes, Lilly Pulitzer, and Tablots. I could go on and on.
She will always be in my heart and I know she's at peace now with Mum Mum and Rip Rip.
With heaps of love from Seattle.

To Adair, Ginny and Crawford - All of you have been in our hearts and prayers during these last couple of years and especially since dear Vicki died. I first met Vicki when we were in college and then she taught in NYC at Chapin when I was a teacher at Brearley. In Darien we shared many interests with numerous common friends, the Junior League, bridge and St. Luke's church to name a few. I recall Vicki wearing hats around town when she first moved to CT as she was properly brought up to do! Her hosptiality was always graciousness personified. When we both moved to New Canaan, we had more one on one visits and shared some great laughs together. Vicki adored her family and I hope all three of you are comforted by the love and care you bestowed upon her. Bob and I will always cherish her friendship.
