I am Hummingbird Studios and I have to acknowledge that beginning. As an artist my inspiration comes daily from Jerry Mize, my dear grandmother who loved hummingbirds. She collected them to no end. She gave them as gifts and I never appreciated hummingbirds until she was gone and now they surround me and follow me in my heart and my mind and sometimes in reality.
So I owe Hummingbird Studios to Jerry Mize. I miss her dearly and my wish is for Hummingbird Studios to keep her memory alive and for her to see my art from wherever she might be, around and above us.
That is why 5% of all proceeds made through Hummingbird Studios will go to support the research of the disease that took her from me. She died of other causes as well, but none hurt more than my last phone call with her when she called me by a name that none of us had ever heard before. To this day I wish I hadn't made that last call and left it at our last visit a few days before when she knew me and we laid together in her hospital bed in my mother's living room and I stroked her hair as she had always done mine but now no longer had the strenth.
As we were leaving I lit a candle for her with the virgin Mary on it, the candle would not stay lit. I knew it would be my last visit. Days later I called and she didn't know me, the next morning she was gone.
I was a part time artist until she left and then I knew I had to pursue art full time and Hummingbird Studios was born.
You'll see many hummingbirds come and go in my work and every piece is dedicated to her. I know she's my muse and that she surrounds me, but I miss her every. single. day.
