Ken was diagnosed about five years ago with mild cognitive impairment. In early 2024, this transitioned to dementia, probably Alzheimer’s and likely with a vascular component. There is no cure, and his condition is declining.
The walk last year was so incredible. The support and love we received meant so much to our entire family. We ended up with 37 team members and raised just shy of $11,000! Ken was asked to represent the blue flower in the ceremony. Blue honors someone living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Very fittingly, we celebrated Ken’s 77th birthday after the walk. Periodically I share memories and pictures of the day with Ken, because dementia is erasing those memories. He is amazed and humbled every time I remind him of how wonderful and inspiring the day was.
Ken is doing pretty well, but this disease is taking a toll on both of us. As I said last year, he is still a sweet man with a quirky sense of humor, a love of music, but especially a love of his family. We seek out things to keep him active, involved, and to stimulate his brain. For example, he has been involved in a dementia chorus this past year and even assisted with introducing one of the songs at the concert.
We are requesting your support again. Please consider donating to our team and/or joining our team. We would love to have you and being surrounded by friends and family adds to the joy of the day. The current plan is to celebrate Ken’s birthday again after the walk.
Thank you for your love and support!
