Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. On July 7th 2024, I lost my grandaddy, my super hero, to Alzheimer’s disease. He was a man of integrity, strength, and a proud U.S. Air Force veteran; but he was so much more than that. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather and even a great grandfather... he loved his family more than anything else in this world. He taught me that kindness matters, that truth forgives and that I am enough. Although his mind was drifting, he still radiated a smile that just made you feel like you were home. He was so much more brave than I could have been. After his diagnosis, he told me something that has forever changed my life;
“I know there’s not a cure, but I sure hope I’ll be able to help someone else in the future.”
That hope is now my mission. It's my "Why". What drives me. Love never forgets and I will continue to be the to carry that hope. It is my reason for pushing awareness, fundraising for research, funding for families, funding for our community. This coming walk in October will be the one year anniversary Walk since his passing. Last year I just attended and this real, I'm taking on a big role and I want to make my grandaddy smile so big I can feel it from heaven. But, I need your help to make this dream happen.
Just to paint a picture, the current statistics in Kentucky:
80,500+ older adults are living with Alzheimer’s
160,000 caregivers provide over 307 million hours of unpaid care
To paint an even closer picture, this is what that means for our own communities...
(Estimated 65+ Population = Estimated Alzheimer’s diagnosis)
Fayette: 55,000 = 5,500
Scott: 27,000= 2,700
Bourbon: 12,000= 1,200
Clark: 20,000= 2,000
Jessamine: 22,000= 2,200
Woodford: 16,000= 1,600
These families are your neighbors, colleagues, and friends. Some people you may know are dealing with this devastating reality right now.
By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
