I have never known a life without Alzheimer’s. It is a disease that has shaped my family.
Starting with my Great Grandmother Ella who had “hardening of the arteries”, Alzheimer's before it was officially called Alzheimer's. At that time no one knew what was happening and there was nothing but fear.
Next was my Grandma Dorothy. When Dorothy was fighting Alzheimer’s, we had little understanding and assumed she had Alzheimer's, but at the time it could only be diagnosed with an autopsy.
Grandma Dorothy had 3 children, Melissa, Charles (my dad), and Jill. All three have battled Alzheimer's. In fact, when diagnosed each one was told, “yes, it’s Alzheimer's, but there’s no hope. We cannot do anything to stop it.”
Looking at my generation, there are 7 of us cousins. 1 of the 7 has already lost her battle with Alzheimer's at age 52.
That’s four generations that have experienced no hope over a span of almost 100 years.
For the remaining 6 cousins in this 4th generation we, for the first time, have some hope! In the past 2 years there are actual treatments, TREATMENTS!
I know there will be survivors in the next generation. Now is the time to put our foot on the gas and continue this fight against Alzheimer’s. The landscape has changed because of your generous donations.
We are finally in the Era of Treatment, the Era of Hope.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we.
