Our Dad...CJ "Old Man" Lindsay
Dad was diagnosed in 2006 with Alzheimer's Disease. He was immediately put on medications to slow the progress however, at this time, there is no known cure. As a family, we did our research, read books, attended support groups yet nothing adequately prepares you for the changes a person goes through as a result of this disease.
Despite the changes, Dad never missed a beat. He was so loving and appreciative of everything and everyone around him. Our saving grace was he never lost his incredible sense of humor. His strength and positive attitude was an inspiration to many and will remain his legacy. He continued to say his famous little sayings, (e.g., you got to go with the flow), and then with that twinkle in his eye he would flash that impish smile that so many know and adore.
Dad lived life to the fullest always giving to others yet never expecting anything in return. He taught us to believe in who we are and to be the best at whatever we decide to do. The word “can't” was not in his vocabulary. One of his most treasured sayings was:
"A kindly word,
a friendly smile,
a helpful hand,
makes life worth while".
As a family, we have so many wonderful memories of Dad. He brought and kept us together until his last breath when we surrounded him at Peace Health Hospital, Vancouver Washington on January 23, 2013. Before he went into a deep sleep, he grabbed on with his infamous hand-grip to let us know he knew we were there with him and to remind us that there is no better way to judge a person's character than by a firm hand-shake. Dad went home to his Heavenly Father.
This is a tribute to all who are battling Alzheimer's and to the caregivers who did such an incredible job ensuring that our Dad was loved and continued to live with dignity. Please be a part of this movement to find a cure for this devastating disease.
Much love and appreciation,
The Lindsay Family
