Three years ago, The Carpet Guys owner, Joe Zago, learned that BOTH of his beloved parents had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Since learning of this diagnosis, The Carpet Guys have become heavily involved with supporting the Alzheimer’s Association through the Detroit Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  

Prior to John & Penny Zago’s diagnosis, Joe didn’t know much about the disease, or how devastating it could be.  The symptoms began with basic confusion and forgetfulness, but quickly progressed to include major impacts on loss of memory for Joes father John, and the inability to get dressed, use the bathroom, read, write, and even speak at times for Joe's mother Penny. Basic and simole everyday life skills that we take for granted, were either now deteriorating, or completely absent.  Watching the two people that had always represented stability and strength, quickly become shadows of their former selves was and has been very devastating to say the least and it has been also eye opening for Joe and his sister Becky.  As the disease continues to progress, his parents will most likely no longer be able to recognize him or his sister. Their bodies will forget how to function all together, and ultimately, forget the ability to live.

Joe now realizes that hundreds of thousands of other families are facing the same challenges and emotional devastation.  There is only one way to resolve this nightmare - we need to find a cure!

Currently more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s! Alzheimer’s disease or another form of Dementia is responsible for the death of 1 in every 3 seniors, more than breast cancer & prostate cancer combined.  The lifetime risk for Alzheimer’s at the age of 45 is 1 in 5 for women & 1 in 10 for men! With statistics like these, it just shows that at some point in our lives, nearly all of us will be affected by this horrible disease.
