Our experience with dementia and Alzheimer’s is not unique. Kelley’s mom began showing symptoms of memory loss and dementia in 2009. She has been at Belmont Village in their Memory Care program since 2011. We have been watching this strong, independent business owner deteriorate slowly year by year. It has been heartbreaking.
Now we are witnessing Bruce’s dad grapple with age- related memory issues as well. This 89-year-old former age group distance running champion, who still runs several times a week, struggles to recall those joyful minutes on the path.
We will be riding our bicycles from St. Augustine, Fl. to San Diego, Ca. on an unsupported, unaccompanied tour. We expect this journey to take approximately 60 days and cover nearly 3400 miles. Our hope is to bring awareness to folks about how Alzheimer’s affects families. We also hope to speak at facilities along the way about our personal experiences with Alzheimer’s and about our journey.
Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in reference to our trip. This is an independent endeavor and we are getting no benefit through the Association for our efforts.
