This is my 17th year participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's. For the 1st 15 years, I walked in memory of my Grandmom, Celia, who had Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.
NOW WE HAVE A NEW FIGHT.
In December 2021, my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. In this family, we always knew that Celia's children could end up with Alzheimer's. Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (EOAD) can sometimes run in the family. My Grandmom was diagnosed at age 59. My Aunt Judy, around age 63. And my Dad Bill, at age 67.
Our family's story is not unique. There are 6 million Americans, like my Dad and my Aunt, living with Alzheimer's Disease. The loved one with AD suffers - losing their memories, their ability to speak, eat, & walk, their ability to connect with the world, and the ability to feel safe and secure in their home, in their body, and in their mind. The caregivers and family watch this happen, and can't do a damn thing about it. We will mourn the loss of our loved one twice - once as they lose the person they were, and again when they pass away. Because there is no cure for Alzheimer's. There are currently no survivors.
But the 1st survivor is out there - somewhere. The white flower will be carried by a SURVIVOR of Alzheimer’s. We aren’t there yet, and still need your support.
THE END OF ALZHEIMER'S STARTS HERE... WITH A GIFT FROM YOU.
