My mom has always been my greatest champion and my most trusted editor. Whether it was a high school essay, college paper, work presentation, or creative project, she was the one I turned to when I needed my words to be stronger, clearer, more meaningful. She has this incredible gift for finding just the right phrase, for seeing what I was really trying to say even when I couldn't quite get there myself.
Mom is the epitome of kindness. She's always been someone who creates beautiful things with her hands, who pours love into every stitch, every project. She's the person who taught me that taking time to craft something well—whether it's a handmade gift or a perfectly edited sentence—is how we show we care.
A few years ago, Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Now, this woman who once helped me find my voice struggles to finish her own sentences. Watching her search for words that used to flow so effortlessly breaks my heart in ways I never imagined possible.
But here's what gives me hope: we are closer than ever to breakthroughs in Alzheimer's research. Scientists are developing ways to slow its progression, to prevent it entirely. Just when we're on the cusp of these discoveries, funding for medical research faces constant threats and cuts. We cannot let budget decisions derail the progress that could spare other families from watching their loved ones fade away.
This is my first Walk to End Alzheimer's, and I'm walking for Mom—and for every family like ours. I'm walking so that the next generation, our children and our community's children, might live in a world where Alzheimer's is something we prevented rather than something we endured.
Please join me in supporting this vital research. Together, we can ensure that the cure we're so close to finding actually makes it to the families who need it most.
