UPDATE: My Dad passed away after battling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's on Aug. 5th in the company of our family.
Walking for my dad, who, in the words of one of his favorite musicians, Johnny Cash, always managed to walk the line, and did it well. Steady, humble, faithful. Today, he is in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, living in a memory care facility in Minnesota. Watching someone I love slowly fade away has been incredibly painful. He was never a man of many words, but Alzheimer’s took even that - his voice, his presence, his spark.
While there are occasional glimmers - times when he sees his grandkids, listens to music, has a strawberry malt or hears my mom’s voice - most days, he is just a shadow of the hardworking, quiet man we knew. An Iowa farm boy who loved house projects, the Hawkeye's, fishing, puzzles, reading the newspaper, singing, and spending time with family. His faith grounded him. He lived simply, saved carefully, and found joy in the little things.
I’m walking and volunteering to feel close to him and to help find a cure for the disease that slowly took him from us.

Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
