My Mom and I have been so much alike our whole lives. We both love gardening and love to cook and have always been a little obsessed with cleaning our house. I would talk to my Mom everyday and compare gardening stories and ask for advice or compare recipes and talk about what we were each making for dinner that night. I have never met anyone who could name every single flower, shrub, tree, and know exactly how to care for each of them. Fast forward now as she struggles with Alzheimers and dementia, she cannot even tell you the name of a rose or a daisy. She does not even remember how to toast bread. Watching her mind deteriorate has been so incredibly difficult. Her whole personality has changed. She is like another lady in my Mom’s body. A phone conversation is so difficult because she can’t remember what I even said two seconds after I say something.
This is why I volunteer with the Alzheimer”s Association. To work towards a world where Alzheimer’s and other dementias will no longer steal our loved ones memories and ability to function. I want to be in a good state of mind as I age as well, and be with my children and grandchildren knowing who they are.
By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please consider making a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease!
Thank you!
