Our Journey: An Update
March 2022 brought the difficult news that my darling Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer?s Disease. Later in 2024, after working closely with Barbara's primary care physician and a local neurologist, we found our way to the dedicated memory team at the KU School of Medicine. Following thorough evaluations, including a lumbar puncture, Barbara became eligible to begin treatment with Leqembi (Lecanemab). This involves bi-weekly infusions and periodic MRIs to carefully monitor for any side effects. While it's not the cure we long for, we have hope that this treatment is helping to maintain her precious memories.
We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the Alzheimer?s Association, the dedicated professionals at the Via Christi Research team, Dr. Amanda Raney, Katelynn M Kreszyn, APRN-NP (our compassionate nurse at KU Med), and Maggie (our guiding program navigator at KU).
The monthly caregiver support group meetings have become a lifeline for me, a space where we can share our experiences and sometimes simply offer each other comfort. My sincere thanks go to Nita Jackson for her kind and understanding leadership of these meetings. Our hope remains strong, and we believe in the power of scientific progress.
Barbara and I share our story as representatives of the over 7 million Americans and 55,000 fellow Kansans living with Alzheimer's. It is so important that we continue to build understanding and encourage our community to confront the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and other dementias by learning the facts available through the Alzheimer?s Association at alz.org.
With heartfelt sincerity,
Mark Chamberlin,
Barbara's Husband and Care Partner
