This year, has been an especially hard year for the whole world. My friend Mark was no exception. He had to make a decision that was harder than any of us can even conceive of. He had to decide whether to continue living with Alzheimers or to die early. Can you imagine? Mark was the most noble of all people that I have ever known. Instead of losing touch with his senses and burden his family with round the clock attention, he decided to go out on his own terms.
He and his wife had discussed it long ago. He was not going to be a vegetable or a financial encumbrance on his family longer than was necessary. To make a decision like that is one thing. To carry it out is another. Thankfully they had moved to a country that is forward thinking enough to allow one to make such a decision, Belgium in this case.
On May 24th Mark Babski had himself Euthanized because of the extent that Alzheimers had deteriorated his life and his natural abilities. And believe me, his abilities were formidable. He was probably the most intelligent, best athlete that I have ever known. The last few days were tough. We communicated via Whatsapp a lot. Talked about songs that touched hearts and said our goodbyes. Man, that was tough. He was not only noble but brave. For that reason I am walking for Mark Babski this year (and probably all years). Please support me(us) in our quest to help find a cure. Thank you,
Craig Hales
