In 2016 my grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It was painful to watch my grandma, who was always such a vibrant, capable, and witty woman, wither away.
Her smiles and adventures turned into isolation, anger, confusion and repeated questions, due to forgetfulness. We tried to hold out and keep her in her home, with in-home care, to keep her comfortable and have some familiarity, but even that became too much of a risk, and her safety became the number one concern. In March 2022, we moved her into a memory care facility, where they were more equipped to care for Alzheimer's patients. Unfortunately, my grandma lost her battle with Alzheimer's on 7/15/24. We miss her terribly, but choose to remember her by help raise funds to find a cure.
On 10/19/2024, I will be participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's in SF, to bring about awareness and funding for Alzheimer's care, support and research, in hopes that one day no one else has to suffer through watching their loved one go through this excruciating nightmare of "losing" a loved one, and so peoples memories can live on within themselves and not have to be carried on by others.
