October 6th is my mom's birthday and I can't think of a better way to honor her and my father. My mom passed away from Alzheimer's on August 12, 2009 and my father passed away on August 10, 2015. Dad was an amazing caregiver to mom and a dedicated volunteer at the Alzheimer's Assn.
If you have been touched by Alzheimer's, you know how terrible this disease is. If you haven't been touched, you are blessed and I hope you never are. This disease takes away so much more than your ability to remember someone's name. It takes away your ability to function on a daily basis. I remember my father give my mother a shower and her screaming that she was getting wet. Or, my mother putting lipstick on her fingernails. It can totally change their personality. My mother was a sweet and loving woman. I never heard her utter a cuss word until she was affected by Alzheimer's. And did the words flow out of her mouth.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's. Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
I am committed to help find the First Survivor. I need your support to do my part! Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.
Thank you for joining our movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease starts here.
