As I lace up my shoes and take my first step towards making a difference, I'm transported back to my childhood, remembering the stoic and strict figure my grandfather once was, and the painful impact his passing had on our family. Knowning there are other families affected by the same struggles, fuels my determination to honor his life, his legacy, and to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer's and dementia. As I reflect on that feeling of loss, I realize that it's not just about me, it's about ensuring future generations don't have to experience the same heartache. This is why I'm committed to walking and raising funds to support groundbreaking research and vital programs that bring us closer to a world without Alzheimer's.
Reflecting on my childhood, and the summers and holidays spent with my grandparents, I'm struck by the scarcity of distinct memories of my grandfather. At the time of his passing I was only 12 years old and my chance to truly know him was stolen by the cruel progression of his disease. Complications from his dementia eventually manifested as difficulties with swallowing, which tragically led to a choking incident. I've come to realize that those fleeting moments I had with him continue to shape my perspective on life and community.
No family should suffer the heartache I've witnessed and the sense of loss we've experienced. It's time for us to come together, steadfast in our commitment, and take action against Alzheimer's and dementia. Every step forward – whether big or small – holds the potential to change someone's journey with Alzheimer's; it's precisely this spark of hope that drives me to fuel the fight alongside you all at the Walk to End Alzheimer's on September 21st. As I stand shoulder to shoulder with all of you at the starting line, every footstep echoes the promise of a brighter tomorrow – one where families find solace in unwavering support and compassion, free from the grip of this merciless disease.
Together, we can stride towards a horizon of hope for those affected by Alzheimer's. Will you stand beside me in our fight? Click the 'Join my Team' button or contribute what you can – every donation counts!
