In 2014, my mother, Kathleen Fraundorfer, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at the age of 63. From the first symptoms, formal diagnosis, clinical trials, and subsequent doctors appointments to the gradual loss of independence; my mother always stayed positive while navigating the disease as best she could. After a hard fought battle, my mother finally succumbed to the disease on November 15th, 2020. I am participating in this year's event to honor her memory and struggle with the disease. I am also running in memory of my grandfather, Donald Sonefelt, who was taken by the same disease.
