Again this year, I walk in memory of my sweet grandmother, Effie, and in honor of my beautiful mother, Kathy-- Mama K. As the disease continues to progress, these yearly updates are getting harder to write & share.
I'm incredibly lucky to be able to visit Mama on my way home a few times a weeks. Her caregivers are kind, funny, and treat her with dignity. I've grown to love them and the other folks who live on the busy 3rd Floor.
The best part of my visits are when I arrive, get a big hug, and inevitably have Mama introduce me to her roommate for the hundredth time. "This is my BABY," she says. "This is MY baby!" Kathy Kutac was always my biggest cheerleader, and that hasn't changed. So much else has, though.
There are good times. When I see her, we sometimes go out to eat or for drives on the Seawall. I bring my dogs to her floor to visit and love on the residents. We always look at the most recent pictures of Mama's granddaughter, Cassie. We had an impromptu Oscars Watch Party earlier this year, which was delightful chaos.
Often I leave and cry in my car, but I'm still thankful every day to have these moments. If nothing else, Alzheimer's teaches us to be present, in this moment, just this one right now.
How could I possibly thank you for all the support through the years? With gratitude, I use my voice to advocate for the humanity of those with dementia. With hope, I raise awareness and funds so that Cassie will never have to go through this experience in the future.
Please join the UTMB JSSOM PA Studies Program and me as we honor the lives and memories of Americans with dementia.
If you can't walk with us on Oct 18th, please consider sharing a donation that will support the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. Thank you, thank you!
