Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a leading cause of death in the US and the most common cause of dementia. In the past, clinicians and researchers thought amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain were the only causes of the declines in thinking, memory, and learning that occur with AD. However, we now realize that plaques and tangles are only one part of the disease. Two of the greatest risk factors for AD are old age and cardiovascular disease. Recent studies demonstrate that with AD there are impairments of the vasculature, specifically the arteries and capillaries in the brain. In our lab, we seek to better understand what changes to the brain vasculature occur in old age and how these changes affect AD onset and progression. Our current research focuses on the effects of artery stiffness, blood pressure, APOE genotype, and menopause on blood vessel dysfunction and AD. Using this knowledge, we can develop better diagnostic markers and treatment options for patients with AD.
We receive funding from the Alzheimer’s Association to conduct this important research. You can make an impact with a donation or even joining our team. Your kindness and generosity truly make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Thank you for your support!
