My name is Julie Van Meter and my Dad, Jim Van Meter was my best friend. After my mother passed in 1997, it was Daddy and me on a journey of evolution; both individually and in conjunction with one another.
I poured so much love, care and compassion into our relationship and this unfortunate circumstance, but ultimately, Alzheimer's ended his life way too soon. Though his earthly presence was taken away from me in 2022 at age 72, his spirit is abundantly alive through the way I live my life.
What you may not know is that we also lost his mother (my grandmother), Enola Van Meter and his grandmother (my great grandmother), Edith Green (Havens) to Alzheimer's. Though I was blessed to know my Grandma Van (Enola) for 33 years and to know my Grandma Great (Edith) for 15 years, Alzheimer's was a part of their respective journeys and end of life stories.
Three generations of the Van Meter family have lived with the reality of Alzheimer's; and as a fourth generation Van Meter, I am stepping forward to lead a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's.
As Delaware was home to all Van Meter generations, I felt it was the best place to build the foundation for this Walk to End Alzheimer's team: Team Van Meter
