On Sunday, April 15, 2012 my mother, Dorothy passed away from Alzheimer's. She was 86 at the time of her death. My mom lived with this horrible disease for approximately 6 years. I watched it take away her ability to form sentences or to find just the right word for the simplest of objects, etc. She forgot names and faces of those of us closest to her. Old friends stopped coming to see her. In the first stages of this debilitating disease she stopped participating in things she loved, like her "Trivial Pursuit" group, and her yearly visits with friends to the Wendy Clinic in Rochester, working at the church for the annual festival. Everything just seemed to come to a halt. Although Alzheimer's took away the mother I knew for 59 years of my life, I think that she and I still had that special relationship a mother and daughter never lose. She may not have always known my name, but deep in my heart I always felt that she knew who I was and how deeply I loved her. I miss her every day and will until the day that I die.
So please, I hope you will find it in your heart to join the fight to cure Alzheimer's. Whether it be by joining my team, starting a team of your own or donating to this worthy cause. It has taken way too many of our loved ones.
