I hate to tell you this but it's only going to get worse, this is what I was told when my mother was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. My mother-in-law Carol told me this after experiencing her own mother Lena suffer through this disease. Unfortunately now I truly understand the meaning of this heart break. While love ones battle through the disease by trying to find humor in an unfortunate situation and try to mask the hurt in their hearts. The day I knew we lost was the day she looked at me and I asked her if she knew who I was, I knew when those blank eyes looked back at me she wasn't in there. Like so many others we lost a mom, a sister, a grandma, a wife and a good friend that could never be replaced. My Aunt Patty said it best, Heavens gain is our loss.
August 2022 my mother lost her battle with Alzheimer's. She lost her ability to speak, write, to stick up for herself and her dignity. This is a terrible disease that slowly takes away your loved one and makes them a shell of a person. My mother was taken advantage of financially by her own husband who was her care taker and denied home care. She over time stopped eating, became incontinent and lost motor functions.
Alzheimer's isn't stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, I'm raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease - funds that allow the Alzheimer's Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
