Help us in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease! Alzheimer's Disease has affected our family, as it has so many other families. My grandmother, Dot, suffered from Alzheimer's for many years, and we lost her in 2014. After a long struggle with this terrible disease, Dot passed away on December 9, the same day that my son Maddox was born.
During her working years, Dot was a successful real estate broker with her own firm in Northern New Jersey. She raised 7 children, had dozens of grandchildren, and became a great-grandmother as well. She loved to travel, and spent her later years taking each of her grandchildren on a special vacation so as to spend more time with them. She enjoyed animals, especially dogs and horses. Dot was an exceptional woman who has led a very fulfilling life.
Dot's husband Don had passed away several years before that. After his passing, it quickly became obvious that Dot had Alzheimer's Disease, and her health and well-being began to decline. Within 6 months, she had to relocate from the large home where she raised her children to an assisted living facility. When it became apparent that even that level of care was not sufficient, we moved Dot to Salisbury, MD to a specialized memory care facility, where she could be closer to several of her children.
It was astounding to see how quickly the disease progressed. Within a few short years, Dot went from being an independent world-traveler to a person who didn't even recognize her own family. It was heartbreaking to visit someone who you shared memories with, only to be met with confusion. As her disease progressed, our family was grateful that we were able to spend those final years with her and say goodbye. Dot's great-grandchildren will never have the chance to know the woman we all knew and loved, but her legacy will live on through her family.
The incidence of Alzheimer's Disease increases every year, and those numbers are on the rise. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's, and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
ERA Martin Associates is participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's again this fall! The Walk event is planned for October 29, and we hope that we're able to walk in person this year.
I hope you will support us in our efforts to raise money to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide. Over 60% of the money we raise stays here on the Eastern Shore and will help improve the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients and their families.
No donation is too small. We truly appreciate your generosity, and we hope that our efforts can mean a better future for those affected by the disease. The end of Alzheimer's disease starts here!
Thank you!
