This is one of a few causes I am passionate about! We truly need to get a handle on it.
Please consider making a donation...even a small one matters!! We are on the verge of the "silver tsunami". Our baby boomers will begin to enter a new phase of life...retirement...and for some, that will include the beginning of alzheimers, dementia, etc.
I didn't have a choice of how soon my exposure was to it. I was about 7 years old when my maternal grandfather was diagnosed and then placed in a VA hospital. I remember visits to the "psych ward". I remember stories of this man, a big man who was a boxer at one point in his life, getting aggressive with the staff.
I watched my aunts and uncles coordinate care for my grandmother, in a very awe inspiring way...I was lucky. They have made a massive impact on my life, with just this alone...every single one of them!! I would get the honor of covering for them on random occasions so they could have a break or vacation....together. I truly feel blessed to have had this time with my grandmother, but like I said...it was random occasions.
Our knowledge and understanding of this devastating disease has expanded exponentially....but we need to know more!! We need to find a cure or ways to help someone. I see families and clients go through this and it is heartbreaking. The patience, tolerance, self awareness and compassion are ALL needed! How prepared do you feel if your parent or partner needs your support and/or care?!?
We need to help our loved ones now, we don't want them to be fearful of their everyday life, not recognizing where they are, what year it is or how you are even related to them...this is because they don't remember or recall. It's NOT their fault or something they can prevent. The time it will take for you to learn to help them, soothe them and be there when they are scared...is going to take alot of patience and determination. It will test your resolve and teach you to appreciate those that take care of our family in specialty homes.
I'm asking for your help, with a small donation or walking with us to raise awareness. I don't want to see the pain and suffering in others while they see their loved one fade away. I don't want to watch another loved one disappear into this heart wrenching disease. I would be grateful for any support you are able to give.
Thank you if you made it this far!
