From years past, many of you know that my mom's Dad was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's back in the late 80's. Al was an excellent grandpa and I am fortunate to remember the time I had with him. After his passing in the early 90's (age 76), Al's brain became a research tool for the UW to further their knowledge about the disease. Research continues today and exciting news has come over the last year that we have a viable TREATMENT for Alzheimer's in the way of a plaque removing infusion process which is proving to give families more time with their loved one. However, this is not a CURE and we still have work to do. Because of your continued support, the Alzheimer's Association IS making headway on this horrible disease through activities such as this Walk that raises funds for continued research as well as helping those in need of care and support.
Some of you also know that my Dad's mother, Naoma, struggled with dementia. Naoma past away on June 6th, 2015 ending the battle for her but we must continue OURS with so many more of us affected by this life changing disease.
My wife's grandmother, Donna Cormany, and her sister both dealt with Alzheimer's and we're grateful Donna's passing came before the most wicked part of the disease but do so miss her dearly.
My interest in supporting Alzheimer's is based upon my family connection and I have always been intrigued by the ongoing research to find a cure. Over a decade ago I made a commitment to support the Alzheimer's Association at a deeper level, by joining the King County Regional Advisory Committee so I could further my advocacy and support of the Association, about 8 years back I joined the Alzheimer's Association Board to deepen my involvement. Jenn, Alex, Sam and I would love your support, whether walking with us, donating to the cause or both!
This year as with last, GLY Construction, continues to be a huge supporter of the Association and has donated to the Alzheimer's Association. Our once small WALK team is bigger and better with "Team GLY - Haakenson". We'd love to have you come walk with us in your "PURPLE" (GO DAWGS!!!) or simply consider supporting our goal to raise at least $5000 for the Association. Oh and if your alma matter is of a different shade of purple (Crimson) then don't worry, donate $100 and you get your very own Purple T-Shirt!
I know many of you receiving this have given generously over the course of the year for other events to benefit the Association or other causes near and dear to you. For that I thank you sincerely, we can't do enough in our community to help those in need. If you can find a way to dig deeper and give again, excellent! If you have a loved one affected by the disease that we can "honor" with our walk, please pass that info along too. This walk is for everyone.
I need your support to do my part! Even consider donating what you would normally spend on lunch for a day. Every little bit helps and together we can make a difference. Please make a donation and/or come join us on Saturday September 28th, to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a future path to cure Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.
Thank you for joining our movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease is coming!
