Growing up, children don't normally pay too much attention to their elders. I however was pretty lucky to have some wonderful grandparents and great aunts and uncles in my life at a young age who taught me how to sew, cook, garden, crochet and even encouraged my passion for art! They were there for me when I needed them most and when I got older, I am glad I was there for my aunt Agda when she needed me the most.
I remember spending weekends and after school with my dad to Seattle so that we could relieve the care giver and bring over groceries, make meals and ensure aunt Agda was ok. I was only a school girl at the time but I knew how important it was to make sure we did all we could to keep her at home, in a place she knew. It wasn't until she was about 95yo that I noticed the dementia was more pronounced. It took her from us 3 years later.
Since then, I've been passionate about how I can honor this feisty, sassy woman who taught me so many great things growing up! Since joining Sigma Kappa, I've raised money, walked, participated in national campaigns, volunteered at nursing homes with Alzheimer's units and will continue to do so until this devastating disease is no longer a battle we have to fight! I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer's!
