My birthday was on September 5th, and my mom forgot about it. But, I expected she would, because she was diagnoses with younger onset dementia earlier this year at the age of 63. I'm heartbroken that she will lose a life of memories, as well as the ability to care for herself. My mom worked hard to do the best she could as a single mom to three kids under age 10. She worked at night and went to school during the day to build a future for her kids. Her determination and hard work sill inspires me.
For now, mom can live independently. When that time comes, I'll be the primary caregiver for her. And that day is coming too soon. I know the road ahead for mom is long, as it is for me as her caregiver. But, I've already found help and support from the Alzheimer's Association. For the 5 years I've worked for the association, I've pointed countless families to that support and I realize now more than ever just how valuable it is. I know that research is advancing to find new treatments and interventions, but there's millions of people just like me--in need of support and resources right now. So, I'm asking for your support, not just to help me, but all caregivers of people with dementia.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 14 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
