The team name of Bart's Brigade is a tribute to my Uncle Sam. He was a Bart Simpson fan, and like Bart, my Uncle Sam was the family cut-up and could be quite the rascal. My Aunt Judy was a true Southern Lady that I first loved as my very cool aunt, but later loved as my friend, confidant and role model. This team was formed to honor and remember this amazing couple that taught me to believe in unconditional love and second chances, the power and goodness of family gatherings and the beauty of the perfectly weeded garden row. Because of Alzheimer's Disease, we lost them way to early.

Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. 80-85% of care for people with Alzheimer's and related dementia conditions is given by family members. As with my family's experience, studies show it is not unusual for caregivers to die before their charges. Those diagnosed with this terrible disease and the loved ones caring for them need our help. In addition to funding research to better treat current sufferers and to one day end the threat of future sufferers, the Alzheimer's Association provides on-going education and care support for these care partners.
