November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, a time to heighten awareness about Alzheimer's disease and show support for the more than 6.2 million Americans that are living with it. About 1in 9 people age 65 and older has Alzheimer’s disease.
My stepfather, Sherwood ‘Pete’ Thomas, was a hard worker, a great provider and had a calming spirit about him. He worked at the same job for over 20 years and loved it. He enjoyed being outdoors and working with his hands. We didn’t realize the subtle changes, until our mom received a call from his job that he seemed lost, confused and forgetful, which was not normal for him. Pete soon retired. His unexpected and rapid decline was met with understanding, compassion, and patience by his wife, Jenny, who was with him when he took his last breath. With the support of the Eastern Shore Alzheimer's Association, hospice care, family and friends, our mom was able to provide him with the most advanced level of care. He passed away 1 day before my birthday and 10 days after his 66th birthday in February of 2020.
I'm participating in the RVA Alzheimer's Association Walk. Every dollar you donate and every step you take will help the Alzheimer's Association provide care and support to all those facing this disease. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s.
Thank you for your kindness and support.
