My first experience with Alzheimer's was with my Aunt Doris. We used to take vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina almost every summer. The family spent hours playing Canasta, one of our favorite card games. One evening I noticed Doris seemed very confused about the game and throwing away good cards to other competitors at the table. I knew what was happening. Sandie, Doris' daughter along with Jan, Sandie's husband, became Doris' caregiver's. We all pitched in to help but Jan and Sandie took the brunt of the caregiving. Doris died June 27, 2015. Sandie, unfortunately died suddenly the following year on October 23, 2016. She was a courageous caregiver to her mother living with Alzheimer's and Jan, her loving husband supported her every step of the way. My walk is memory of Doris and Sandie and in honor of Jan.
