I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 6 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 152 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.

This fight is very personal to me.  Dementia affected my maternal grandmother - an intelligent woman who taught in a 1-room schoolhouse!  Next, my mother had the disease.  Now I've lost my beautiful sister, Becky, to this horrid disease.  Watching this disease rob my sister of her memories was the hardest.  She no longer remembered close friends whom she worked with for over 30 years.  Becky was an excellent cook; but became so she recognized only a few foods.  In the past, when I would call, she always cheerily asked "Is this my sister calling?"  or "Is this my Jennifer"?  But too soon she no longer had any idea I was her sister - or for that matter, who I was at all.  You just cannot prepare yourself for the moment when your "big sister" no longer knows who you are...  I thought I was strong enough to handle that situation when it finally arose, but I cannot put into words how devastating it was that my sister, who had known me for 69 years, no longer knew who I was.  Dementia robbed me of my sister - and robbed Becky of her life.  We simply must find a cure for this horrible disease.
