My mom Kelly was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease in October of 2020; however, we saw signs of dementia many years prior. I have watched as the loving mother I once knew has slowly slipped away from us. I mourn the loss of who she once was, and I wish that I could go back and do the parts of life with her over and over again. She had the most contagious laugh and beautiful smile, she loved to make others laugh, and had a sense of humor that would not quit. She always had a trick up her sleeve - one of the worst days of her life was when caller ID was invented, because she couldn’t prank phone call people anymore. She was sassy and spunky, and she was always dressed to the nines. Her favorite store was The Teej (TJ Maxx) and she never left that place without making a small (or large!) purchase. She was proud of where and who she came from and her family that she grew up in, she loved both her mother and her father dearly, and it was a special honor for her to care for them both in the final years in each of their lives. She taught her children to love and cherish relationships, to serve others, and to be kind and loving to all – no matter where that person had been, or where they were going. I could go on and on about the kind of person my mom is, she’s the best of the best, and how lucky am I to be hers. I love my mom very much, I miss her, and I wish that she could remember, but I promise I will remember for her.
I am raising funds to help advance the process of finding a cure for this horrible disease, and I hope one day that miracle will come. I am participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's to provide support and empathy with other family caregivers like my father, my brothers, and myself. Caregiving is not easy, whether it is full-time or part-time, we can support and strengthen one another. I am raising awareness about this disease in my sweet mom’s honor. I truly hope to carry out the legacy of the amazing woman that my mother was and still is.
Please consider registering as a participant in this Walk to End Alzheimer’s with us, we would love to be together with family and friends to honor Kelly and the many other individuals who suffer with this devastating disease. Together, we can bring understanding and awareness of Alzheimer’s and the fight to end this disease.
