My grandparents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s some years ago. Since then, I’ve become familiar not only with their situation, but with those of many extended family members and neighbors who also experience dementia. The condition is difficult for them, but my heart goes out even more to their caregivers—the spouses, children, siblings, and others who shoulder the burdens of their loved ones’ ever-expanding needs.
These caregivers strive to maintain their loved ones’ physical and emotional well-being, balancing on the shifting line between keeping them safe and respecting their individuality, all while navigating their own fear, uncertainty, and grief—watching their loved one’s inevitable decline, wondering if the dementia will someday be their own fate.
The caregivers I know are brave, kind, and selfless. Too often, they feel anxious, overwhelmed, and hopeless. That is why I am joining the Walk—to raise awareness and funds for the support, resources, and research that will bring an end to Alzheimer’s, to let the heroic caregivers know that they are not alone, and that their fight will one day end. Please consider joining me, either by donating or registering for the Walk yourself, wherever you are.
