When I was seven years old, my family was told that my grandma had Alzheimer’s disease. We were all in shock, and I didn’t even know what it meant. I didn’t understand at first because she seemed like the grandma she had always been.
Through the past five years I’ve seen her go through the different stages.
At first, she only forgot the simple things. Things like where she put something or where household items were.
Then it got worse. She could still remember our names, but she couldn’t remember things that we had told her five minutes before. She had a hard time recognizing where she was, or where she lived. She would panic, and get lost. It was hard on all of us trying to take care of her.
Now, five years after her diagnosis, she has changed drastically. She barely knows who I am anymore and that hurts. She sometimes even forgets who my mom is or my grandpa is.
She now lives in a memory care center in Connecticut. There a she has made a lot of new friends and has fun singing, dancing, gardening, and making crafts. Some days when we visit, she has a smile on her face and is happy. Other days, she’s tired and confused and sad. Even though she now lives there, she often forgets where she is and she has no recollection of her situation.
I miss her so much and I don’t want to see her go. I love her with all my heart. This disease hurt her. It hurt me. It hurt my family.
While there may be no hope for her, I want to help so the other people that get this disease don’t have to deal with this and their families don’t have to deal with this I don’t want people to have to feel like we did. I want to end Alzheimer’s.
I am an Alzheimer’s young advocate. Which means I am representing the Alzheimer’s community. My job is to help make the world a better happier place for those who have Alzheimer’s.
Help make the world a better place and donate. Even one dollar can help change the world.
