Year 5. My mom has been at a lovely residential memory care facility for the past year. She sings. She dances. She is a beloved member of her community. The staff gush about how much they love my mom. She even started speaking spanish (which she hasn’t spoken in 30 years). I am thankful she still recognizes me. Her beautiful smile continues to light up a room.
On a sadder note, she struggles with self-care. Staying in touch is difficult as she is unable to use a phone. She has forgotten almost every detail of her former life. I am grateful though - she still remembers I am her daughter.
Long before my mom’s diagnosis, Kyle and I raised funds for Alzheimer’s research and support in memory of Kyle’s grandmother and uncle who also suffered from this disease. Our family remains steadfast in our commitment towards Alzheimer’s funding. Abigail has even taken the initiative to serve as a Alzheimers Youth Advocate. She will be advocating to governmental officials and raising funds for our local Walk to End Alzheimers this year. We hope you will consider making a donation. Thank you.
