This year for the Walk to End Alzheimer's, I am honored to be walking as the team captain for the Molecular and Human Genetics department at Baylor College of Medicine. The walk will be held on Saturday, November 9th at 9:30am at the University of Houston Lynn Eusan Park. This disease isn't just a diagnosis; it's a thief of memories, a destroyer of families, and a relentless force that demands our collective action.
My motivation for participating runs deep. I walk to honor my father's memory and to salute my mother's unwavering dedication as his primary caregiver. Alzheimer's affects so much more than just the patient - it takes a huge toll on the family. The Alzheimer's Association provides so many support resources that I wish my family had known about when my father was alive. But this isn’t the only reason why I’m participating in this very worthwhile fundraiser. In my 32 years at Baylor, I've witnessed the tireless dedication of brilliant minds like Drs. Huda Zoghbi, Hugo Bellen, Josh Shulman, and countless others, who devote their lives to unraveling the mysteries of Alzheimer's and related neurodegenerative diseases. Their groundbreaking research offers a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness, but they need our support to turn their discoveries into life-saving solutions. The Alzheimer's Association has been a beacon of support, providing resources and funding critical research projects in our department. However, with over 5 million Americans currently battling Alzheimer's, and that number expected to triple by 2050, our fight is far from over.
Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of these diseases. And we are turning a corner with support from people like you! Together, we can end Alzheimer's and other dementias. I invite you to join me in this important cause. Whether by participating in the walk, making a donation, or spreading awareness, your support will contribute to our collective mission of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Alzheimer's.
