Dear friends and compassionate souls,
I come to you with a heartfelt plea, fueled by personal experience and unwavering determination. My grandmother was a warrior who battled diabetes, dementia, and other ailments during her twilight years, and she left an indelible mark on my heart. Her struggle was not just hers; it was shared by countless families who have witnessed their oved ones grapple with these cruel adversaries.
In those final moments, as she lay in a coma-like state, my grandmother's eyes closed and her words became a mere murmur. But then, a miracle unfolded. A FaceTime call connected us across the miles. Her eyes fluttered open, and she sat up, as if summoned by an unseen force. We conversed -- the last conversation she would ever have -- and she whispered the cherished words she used at the end of every one of our calls: "I love you the most, John Corbett."
That poignant moment remains etched in my soul. It's a gift I hold close, a testament to the power of connection and love. And so I walk -- for her, for all the grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, and friends who have faced Alzheimer's and dementia head-on.
