Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Deeda was my paternal grandmother and looking back, I realize that she was one of my best friends. I was her favorite grandchild. I could talk to her about anything and ask for help/advice anytime. She hated it when I borrowed her truck but she never told me no.
After her unfortunate diagnosis, she lived in a facility specifically for Alzheimer's sufferers. I went to visit her once in her new home and she spoke to me as if I were her little sister. I didn't want to see her like that and I knew she didn't want it either.
The night she passed away, she visited me in a dream. We were shopping together just like we used to do at K-Mart and she had given me money to use at the gum ball machines. These were happy times for her and she wanted me to remember her exactly this way. The next morning when the phone rang from the dining room wall, I knew. I knew that she had left this world because I had just seen her and watched her say goodbye.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
